Program: Honors Health Sciences Level I
During my first year here at McMaster, I attended an Indigenous Child Health Symposium that opened my eyes to health issues amongst a population just 30 mins away from my university campus, on Six Nations reserve. Wanting to learn more about these issues and teach other students about the prominent health concerns in our community, I was eager to join McMaster’s Indigenous Health Movement. At this year’s conference I want students to be inspired and aware of the health related problems that arise amongst land and water on reserves. These are basic elements that impact many dimensions of everyone’s life. I hope that this year’s conference sparks a curiosity in students about health and healing within the Indigenous people. Indigenous health is overlooked in today’s society and as the Health Sciences Faculty Liaison this year, I want to foster discussion and educate my peers on the importance of being knowledgeable in this aspect of healing as well. Potentially working in the healthcare field in the future, I aspire to gain a greater understanding of all the healthcare practices and the cultures of people in my community.
