As a first year student looking to get involved around McMaster and as a member of the Six Nations community, when I came across the IHM, I was immediately interested. I seen the IHM as an opportunity to meet and collaborate with new people from different programs, years, and backgrounds, while also being able to act as an ally for Indigenous communities. The IHM has allowed me to do this, but has also allowed me to recognize the deficit in my own knowledge on Indigenous health issues, and given me the opportunity to further, not only my own, but also the knowledge of others on the topic.
Prior to joining the IHM, I was not fully aware of the extent of Indigenous issues, but this group has taught me so much and further shown me the need for change. It is my hope that people attending this year’s conference will desire to learn more about the topic of Indigenous health issues, and feel inspired to also become advocates for Indigenous communities.
